Reuters Athens Bureau - 06.10.2009
DEBT

Seen by investors as the eurozone's soft underbelly, Greece has the currency bloc's second largest debt as a percentage of GDP after Italy, forecast at 103.4% in 2009.

Yield spreads on Greek bonds over German bunds hit a record high in February, as investors fled the euro area's periphery during the financial crisis. Although spreads have now returned to more normal levels, Greece's ballooning debt remains the economy's most serious risk.

Rating agencies Fitch and Moody's have downgraded their outlook on Greek government bond ratings, citing concerns over the impact of the economic downturn on public finances. Standard & Poor's cut Greece's rating to A- in January.

SLOW REFORMS, PRIVATISATIONS

Greece faces the risk of extended slow economic growth if it fails to adopt structural measures to boost competitiveness and correct its fiscal imbalances, the EU and the IMF have said.

But facing street protests and resistance within its own ranks, the outgoing conservative government was slow to implement the required structural reforms.

In 2008, an overhaul of the social security system, which experts warned would collapse in 15 years due to an ageing population, fell short of what was necessary. Education reform, seen as crucial to making the labour market more competitive, met a similar fate amid violent protests.

The government was more successful with privatisations. It sold a stake in OTE telecom to Deutsche Telekom (DT) and privatised cash-strapped Olympic Airlines.

ECONOMIC RISKS

Greece's economy, which makes up about 2.5% of the euro zone's total, is forecast to slide into recession this year for the first time since 1993.

Tourism and shipping remain Greece's main economic pillars, making it particularly vulnerable to the global downturn. Although shipping has shown signs of recovery, tourism has been especially hurt this year.

Greek banks, although largely safe from the toxic assets which brought down global giants, have invested heavily in the Balkans and their profit growth has waned as the once-booming economies of eastern Europe slow down.

Standard & Poor's views Greece's banks as facing the highest long-term economic risks in western Europe.

SOCIAL UNREST/VIOLENCE After Greece's worst riots in decades in December 2008, violence has simmered with frequent gas canister attacks and some bombings. The riots were triggered by the police killing of a teenager and fanned by high youth unemployment as well as mistrust of the political system.

Calm soon returned but far-left and anarchist groups have renewed attacks on businesses and police, culminating with the killing of a policeman in June. Leftist guerrillas claimed responsibility for a bomb that went off on Oct.2 near a conservative rally before Oct.4 general elections but caused no injuries.

Analysts say that another flare-up is possible as long as the roots of dissatisfaction remain.

When a new business comes online and begins to look for ways to monetize its website, one of the most common questions they ask is, "What is AdSense?" or, "How do I get a Google AdSense Account? AdSense is the simplest form of paid advertising available to a website owner. While AdSense is a viable monetization strategy, it is not appropriate for every website. Small business websites typically have thirty or less pages. The site is more like an online brochure. Unless the website gets a lot of traffic, AdSense will only produce a few pennies per day. Other forms of advertising may provide better monetization for sites that are small or that are not yet getting enough traffic.

Informational sites, such as those provided by nonprofit organizations, would benefit more from AdSense. Even if the information they provide is not massive, their sites typically draw enough traffic to make AdSense profitable. The income, even if small, would be one way to pay for the cost of sustaining the site. I have also noticed some government sites using AdSense, as well as sites that promote or provide information about a particular City or locality.

Mega sites, on the other hand, are perfect for AdSense. It can be the main sources of income for sites such as article directories, share cooking recipes sharing sites, and any type of site that has a large database of information.

Obtaining a Google AdSense account requires that you already have a website and that you already have enough content in the site for Google to judge its quality and appropriateness for their advertising clients. I recommend that you don't request a Google account until you have at least twenty pages on your site.

Once your Google AdSense account is approved -- a process that takes a couple of days -- you can begin inserting the code in your pages. This is where the art begins. Placing ads on a page without having them screaming that they are advertisement is an art in itself. Many books have been written about the subject, but the best training there is available on the subject is a series of videos produced by Michael Cheney, who spent a whole year researching and testing AdSense on his websites. His obsession resulted in the most lively and profitable training available on the subject.

Juan Carcache got his start in direct sales in the mid 70's and soon thereafter began to create his own products and to promote them through magazine advertising and direct mail. He has been a professional consultant since 1986 and has conducted training seminars in the United States, Germany, and Mexico. His website, http://www.eGrow-Your-Business.com, provides resources to help small businesses develop their online presence. I asked this question because according to a NCSA Cyber Security Survey conducted by McAfee, we as consumers seem to have a knowledge gap between what we claim to know and our actual ability to prove we are Internet savvy. For example their telephone survey revealed that 98% of Americans do not know the risk level of a website before they visit it. Additionally, 64% do not know how to determine if a site is safe and another 78% admit when viewing search results, they have no idea how to tell if any of them might lead to a high-risk website.

To Know the Answer is to Know Your Objective
The answer basically depends upon what you are trying to do. Do you want to determine if your purchase transaction is being processed securely? Do you want to know if a site is safe for your child to be on? Or, do you wish to know if a site is simply guilty of uploading spyware, malware, adware or some other unwanted problem onto your PC's operating system. Lets review a couple of proactive measures that can point us in a more positive direction and enhance a safer Internet experience.

Basic Data Encryption Protects Purchase Transactions
When you make a purchase online you ultimately end up sending out confidential information such as a user name, password, credit card number or something you wouldn't normally publish in a newspaper for everyone's viewing and subsequent use. Well, the Internet (www) is a world wide web for the exchange of free information. This is nice but some things need to be private to avoid identity theft. So, when you get to a shopping cart to make your purchase of a product or service, you want to be sure the transaction data is encrypted. Two basic ways to tell this information is being sent securely is to verify that information by looking for a small padlock in the browser window (usually in the lower right hand window). You should also take note it should appear to be in the locked position. You might also see it next to the address bar if for example you are using Internet Explorer 7

A web address (URL) (Sample= https://www. somesite . com ) that begins with this https, is short for Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer. This https is a secure method of accessing information on a web page and/or sending information across the Internet and to a secure website. What this means is the confidential information (data) you type into this browser window, as plaintext will be encrypted before being sent which is designed specifically to safeguard the data and improve/protect your security. These two measures are designed to announce to you that an Internet web page is safe and secure.

What is a High-Risk Website?
A high-risk website is a web page considered dangerous because it introduces threats such as spyware, adware, malware, online scams, spam, intentional redirects to unfavorable sites and a slew of other threats designed for stealing, prying into or eradicating files on your computer.

How Do You Know High-Risk Websites Before You Go?
There are free Web safety tools (utilities) that help keep you safe from adware, spam and online scams as you search and browse the Web and these software enhancements are best known as site advisoriers. These programs review sites and assign safety ratings that display adjacent to or over a web address you are about to click on and subsequently access. They are in fact powerful tools that enforce Internet safety. These utilities assign a site rating of red, yellow or green pretty much like a traffic light. A color of grey is a basic advisory that a site has not yet been analized and rated.

Two of the more popular utilities programs are Site Advisor and WOT. For more information about these utilities and free downloads it is worth your time to visit both their sites at siteadvisor(dot) com and mywot (dot) com. Bear in mind that there are millions upon millions of websites under constant review and although these utilities do a great job enhancing security efforts, the task of evaluation is a daunting task to keep up with their efforts to provide risk-free surfing; they do not provide absolute protection. View these utilities as just one layer of protection. Every computer should also at a minimum employ an anti-virus software, an enabled firewall and have anti-spyware software installed.

Protecting Your Children from Crime
There are a lot of companies that offer free and low cost software designed and employed to protect children from sexual deviants, cyber crime, identity theft and the whole boatload of unfortunate criminal activities on the web. Some great examples are listed at registryfixing (dot) com under their Child Safe Surf, PC Tools, Privacy Controls, ZoneAlarm and other Navagation Buttons. Bear in mind as well there are parental control options available on your home computer as well. For guides on How to Set "Parental Controls" Using Windows , Comcast, Internet Explorer, Fire Fox, Linux and just about everything else do a web search for "setting parental controls"an you are sure to find a step-by-step guide for just about every situation.

I hope, this highly condensed guidance is noteworthy and a good proactive start in your ever-increasing need to be computer savvy and safe on our modern day Internet. Remember, it takes our combined effort to avoid crime and protect ourselves and loved ones in a world so much more condensed and accessible with our abilities to communicate freely. If you think this article is beneficial, do not by shy about sharing it with family and friends.

Ronald Hudkins administers a site dedicated to software downloads that primarily focus upon PC registry repair, optimization and security. He sponsors programs, services and resources dedicated to protecting consumers from identity theft. His site gives away free Books on vital consumer awareness issues. Earning money online from marketing is not as simple as one assumes it to be. In fact, there are a lot of important things that one should consider in order to make huge profit online. Pay per click advertising is very helpful when it comes to boosting your profit margin and also fetching an instant income. There are several reasons why this kind of advertising has seen success in the online businesses. Some of them have been presented to you in this article. Before you can decide how you are going to carry out your online marketing, it is essential that you understand the Dos and Don'ts of it. In addition, a fair view of online advertising should be made clear to you. You can choose an advertising strategy that best suits your business needs.

The top five advantages are:

1. It is obvious that when you opt for Pay Per Click advertising, your website comes in the immediate search results and stands high chances of being noticed and viewed by the customers. It is the general mentality of customers to check only the first few search results and quite rarely, they also check the second page of the results.

2. In this scheme of advertising, your ads will be prioritised and also be placed in the top position. This will hold you back from spending on several other web development strategies. However, this advantage comes with a cost. You need to pay enough for ensuring a better position for your ads.

3. Your ads will appear at the appropriate place in major search engine results. This directly speaks to the consumers about the product they are looking for. If your ad is very attractive and informative in nature, chances that the customers click on this ad are amplified.

4. The companies opting for this advertising strategy are provided with an edge over their rival companies thus ensuring a boom in their sales. In addition, there is every chance that the new customers can be made permanent ones by providing good web content that will help them apart from just reading about the product.

5. The amount that you pay for every click is worth the money since only potential customers are drawn to your website.

Thus, pay per click advertising is one such advertising scheme that will surely benefit online marketing.

Driving visitors to your blog is vital for seeing to it that your promotional campaign is a winner. Pay Per Click advertising is one of the most popular methods site owners drive traffic to their websites. Shortened as PPC, Pay Per Click campaign is considered as targeted advertising. Not like banner advertising or other types of marketing, Pay Per Click campaign guarantees that you simply pay for ads that works. With a Pay per click campaign you pay every time someone clicks your link, seeing to it that your advertising money are not misspent or wasted.

The major advantage to using PPC campaign is that you will be permanently visible in the leading search results, and you don't have to be bothered on paying for misspent campaign space. Through some manner of campaign, the method was based upon impressions. For instance, you would pay any time your ad was displayed. This had a lot of drawbacks, if your ad was displayed on the bottom section of a web site, you run the risk of paying for impressions that were not obvious. When compared to banner campaign, there is no doubt that PPC campaign is more successful.

When you examine a search result on Google, you'll notice 2 types of links. The top and side links are sponsored or Pay per click campaign. Underneath those, you will find natural search results. These are the outcome that were returned based on the content of the sites. It is best to use both natural and Pay per click advertising. By having keyword phrase rich content as well as Pay per click you can make sure that your web site can pick up many visitors. If you are just starting out to Pay per click advertising, you be able to regulate your budget at a small amount and launch your campaign. This will provide you the independence of trying out an advertising without sensation that you have invested too much. PPC is a impressive method to push traffic to your web site and a vital element in your affiliate advertising plan.

Are you looking for ways to increase traffic, increase your Google

PageRank and decrease your Alexa Ranking? Listed

below are 23 steps that will help you achieve this goal.

1. Content - It is all about the 3 C's - Consistent, Current, Content. Post at least 5 entries a week, if you consistently post information it also attracts new visitors and subscribers.

2. Press Releases - Send out a press release announcing the launch of your site. Any newsworthy item should also be considered for a press release. We recommend a site like PRLog.org, a free press release website. Occasionally, Google News will pick up a press release off this site if it is gaining interest after posting.

3. Facebook - Are you on Facebook? If so, you can set up an account for your site or create a fan page. Then invite your friends to join. You can tie in your RSS feed (new entries) so anyone visiting will see current information. When someone becomes a fan or friend you will reach their friends and gain more followers.

4. Twitter - We have seen lots of success with people that have used Twitter to network their site. Once you learn how Twitter works and the etiquette of networking you should find some success. The "tweets" you come across can inspire articles and form relationships. These relationships you build can result in posts to your site and a "guest" appearance. Your guest can provide information from an expert in the field and be a benefit to your readers.

5. Blog Catalogs - Sign up for Blog Catalogues, it just so happens that a popular one is actually called BlogCatalog.com. This can get your name out there and introduce you to other sites that you will find helpful.

6. Article Marketing - Many of your entries will make good topics for an article. You can edit your post to appeal to a larger audience and post it on that site. If you post good content it will result in views to your article and then clicks to your site.

7. Subscriptions - Provide your readers with an email subscription service for those that don't want to miss the most recent articles. You can sign up with a service, such as Feedburner, and have it set up to automatically check once a day for new content and send it out.

8. Email blast - Email all of your contacts to introduce them to your site. Let them know what beneficial information you provide. Ask them to visit your site and subscribe to your email updates and register. Ask for feedback, do they like the layout, the look and ask them to critique to help you improve your site. Then ask them to help you pass the word and email their contacts.

9. Social Bookmarks - Tag your best posts at sites like Digg, StumbleUpon and Technorati. Every time you have a tag out there, it is one more inbound link. Links to your site will improve your rating.

10. Trading links - Network with others that provide similar information and add a link to their site and ask them to link to you. You can also introduce them to your readers as someone you follow.

11. Alexa Widget - Add an Alexa widget to your site that shows your ranking. When you have this widget on your site it also improves your own Alexa ranking.

12. Default Home Page - Ask friends and family if they will add your site as their default home page on their computer. Every time they open their browser, it is one more hit on your site.

13. Forums - Find a few forums related to your site and post questions and answers. Add value to that community. Set up a signature page that you can use to sign out that includes your website.

14. Interlinking - As you add content to your site, link to other articles that you have already written that are similar. This allows people to find more articles on that subject that are on your site. Sometimes a visitor to your site may not find what they are looking for in the article they are reading, but the information may be in a related article and this leads them there. The longer a visitor stays on your site the better chance you have for them to subscribe or return to your site.

15. Site Map - Put together a site map and submitted it to Google, Yahoo and MSN. This site map includes all the blog entries as a separate page. The more pages you have on your site the more content you are providing which increases your standings.

16. Google Analytics - Use Google Analytics to track the page hits and number of visitors. Google Analytics provides reports that inform you of the most active pages, where your links come from and what keys words are being used in the search engines to find your site.

17. Keywords / Metatags - Each page on your site has a unique page description and a unique set of key words. While many pages use the same key word, no two pages have the same set. The key word list contains a long list of words related to information provided on your site. Make it a point to use those key words in your posts. This increases your keyword's density. According to Google, the greater your keyword density, the more relevant you are.

18. Guest Blog - Highlight other websites, articles, products and people on your site. This provides more content and links. This is a great way to provide your readers with access to experts in the field or wonderful products.

19. Contests - Provide giveaways and contests for your readers. This can attract many to your site. These giveaways and contests provide another opportunity for a press release and links to our site.

20. Logo / Branding - Have a logo that is memorable and eyecatching. One that distinguishes who you are.

21. Easy Links - Provide information on how others can link to your site and make it easy.

22. Kirtsy.com - This is a great site to find popular and relevant articles. Once you join kirtsy you can share articles that you find interesting and add them to their site. You can also add your best articles from your website. When you go to their home page you will see articles posted and in the green box, it shows you how many votes an article receives. The more votes an article gets the more popular it becomes and the more exposure it receives. This site can also be an indicator as to what is a popular topic.

The first question that may come to mind for a lot of readers is "What is an Alexa Rank?" The answer is simple. Alexa is a ranking based on gathered browser data. This information is taken and used to calculate your rank amongst other websites. Any time you approach advertisers online looking for someone to pay for ad space on your website, you will need to prove that it is worth their money and Alexa Ranking is an industry standard. When your Alexa Rank gets within the top 100,000 it is almost an accurate representation of the quality of your traffic.

Whether you put a lot of importance on Alexa or not, I am sure that having a higher Alexa Rank will benefit you. Websites with high Alexa Ranks have a tendency of keeping their audience and building it. This means that if you have a low Alexa Rank and a Webmaster visits your site, he may not think you are a credible source of information (especially in this Niche) and may decide not to come back; however, if you have a good rank and provide top notch information then you are almost guaranteed a returning visitor!

Here are 5 Great Ways to Increase Your Alexa Rank:

1. Install the Alexa Toolbar.

This is the first step that will increase your Alexa Rank. Installing the Toolbar on your own personal computer and setting your website as the browser's homepage is the easiest thing you could do to improve your rank. This won't do much when you look at the big picture, but if you want a quick confidence boost then this will do the trick. This gives you the impression that you are getting somewhere! You can also install the Alexa Toolbar on all of your computers and it will multiply the effect.

2. Get Others to Install the Alexa Toolbar.

Try to convince your friends and family to install the toolbar and set your site to the homepage on their own computers. You could potentially raise your rank significantly if a couple dozen people start doing this. Nag your friends every day if you have to until they do it. It takes only a minute and it is completely free!

3. Put the Alexa Widget on Your Website.

Putting the Alexa Widget on your website doesn't only show people your Alexa Rank, but it also summons curiosity. Those who aren't using Alexa will wonder what it is, they will ultimately click on it to find out and install the toolbar. This will turn many of your returning visitors into Alexa Rank Builders!

4. Drive Webmaster Traffic to Your Website.

It is a known fact that when you step into a Web Development Niche that a lot of your visitors are going to be Webmasters and other Bloggers. Alexa Rank doesn't weight non-Alexa Toolbar traffic very highly; therefore, you will not see a dramatic increase in your rank if your readers don't install the toolbar. If your website can catch a lot of traffic from webmasters then you know that a good percentage of them will have the toolbar installed for their own gains and purposes. This is probably the best thing you can do to Increase Your Alexa Rank! If you aren't too sure about how to get webmasters to visit your site or you think your niche is wrong for it then you could always visit Webmaster Forums and ask opinions on your website and drop your link.

5. Write a Post about Alexa Ranking.

This is something that not many people think about, but I believe that writing the post is a sure way to Increase Alexa Rank. The main reason is because it will put into perspective the value of Alexa and people who are already visiting the website will Install the Alexa Toolbar. Those who don't believe in the power of Alexa may start to believe and those who have not been enlightened will have seen.

What is Alexa Rank

Alexa Rank is a scheme of ranking of websites or blogs in which the ranking is done on the basis of the density of traffic every website or blog has by counting the number of visitors at a particular time. But for Alexa Rank to work, it must be ensured that Alexa Toolbar is installed and is running. Installing Alexa Toolbar is recommended because the bloggers and advertising companies or advertising networks such as Sponsored Reviews and Blogvertisers normally pay attention on the Alexa Rank for deciding whether a review be obtained for the said blogs or websites. High number of Alexa rank of a website seems to be important just because, the advertising companies rely on this ranking to determine the cost for placing advertisements in the concerned websites. Many advertisers and ad networks use Alexa Rank to determine the website’s value of advertising, as examples; Text Link Ads, Sponsored Reviews and ReviewMe are such advertising companies. Using Alexa Rank, these companies decide how much to pay for an advertisement in the websites or blogs. Hence, higher Alexa Rank gives higher popularity and inclination towards such websites.

Benefits of Higher Alexa Rank

There are many benefits of higher Alexa Rank as; the Alexa Ranking scheme considers records of last three months when calculating the Rank of a particular website. By counting last three months’ record and taking the average value, gives a more logical and realistic calculation of the density of traffic of websites. Considering records of last three months lessen the chance of fabrication of abnormal hike in website logging in. Here it must be kept in mind that Alexa assess those web sites which have been visited by the users through the Alexa toolbar. Hence, there are greater chances for web sites which have much traffic of visitors and have higher Alexa rank, to get larger exposure.

Further on the other side, if some websites have few users but through Alexa toolbar they accessed the website and the same website will get ranked high enough. Having higher Alexa rank for a website gives a hint of the rush of a particular web site and the popularity of it. This popularity helps to make a decision as to whether to trust a website or make online purchases. It helps to measure the level of competition with other web sites by watching others’ Alexa Rank.

Also, having high Alexa Rank attracts advertisers and they simply fix higher prices for their advertising in your web site. This includes blogs also. A blog which has high Alexa Rank definitely attracts other bloggers attention and they definitely place links of your blogs which in turn increases your popularity. As far as marketing websites are considered, a site which has high Alexa Rank has a high selling rate than other sites which sell the same products. This is proven by many marketing surveys. Pagerank is one of the most important factors of your site or blog. It determines how popular your blog is, and also how many websites link to it. If you follow these 5 ways to raise your websites pagerank then you will see some traffic coming in and more people sticking around.

1. Comment many blogs, if you leave 20 different comments on different blogs daily that is 600 backlinks monthly from many sources. 30 minutes of work for so much gain, you will definitely see your traffic improve after a couple months. Make sure to target the niche that you want yo visit your site.

2. Submit your blog or site to many directories, this will take a little more time and will not improve your traffic too much but it does give you backlinks.

3. Guest blog on blogs with high pagerank and write your link on the bottom of the article. Guest blogging is where you write a unique article on a blog for free to raise your pagerank and get a targeted audience to view your site. If people like your article then they will most likely visit your site. This is a very effective method but you must have a unique article only for the site you are gust blogging for.

4. Exchange links with other bloggers or websites.

5. Submit your articles to ezines and social bookmarketing sites, these are very effective methods. There will be a more detailed post on how to do this

People are very confused about Pagerank. At one end of the scale there are those who believe it's worthless, at the other there are those who believe it's of significant value. So who's right?

First off let's look at how you secure Pagerank. When someone links to a page on your site it's considered to be a vote for it, a thumbs up. It's one of the key metrics Google's systems use to decide the importance of a page. ONE of the key metrics. If many other pages link to your page they are giving Google a signal that your page is important. If the pages linking to your page also have links to them and they are considered to be important pages, their link to you is given even more value. This is why some people suggest it's not worth getting a link from a page unless the page you want the link from has itself got a decent pagerank - this is misguided.

With me so far?

The history behind this relates to the Google boys, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, being academics. In academia peer reviewed papers are the common currency of 'status'. If you write a paper and your peers review and applaud it you are off to a good start. If your paper is then referenced by other people's papers it's stature and kudos goes up further, as does yours as the author.

So, suggesting Pagerank is worthless is actually untrue, it may not generate a ton of lucrative traffic, but it does have a value.

So why is it not the be all and end all of a web page? Simple, relevancy.

Google needs to deliver relevant results to people searching. If they don't people will go elsewhere for their search needs. It doesn't simply look for the page with the highest Pagerank to put at number one, it looks for a page that is most relevant. This is why a Pagerank 3 page can be at number 1 with a Pagerank 6 being at number 10.

How Google decides on relevancy is complex and they don't share the formula with the outside world! The stuff we know is used includes various on page 'tags' such as Title, H1 etc, and the relevancy of links.

So, an example - Suppose you have a page on your site and it has 100 links to it. These links are from pages that themselves have links and as such a decent Pagerank. These links give your page a Pagerank of say 4. However, although the pages linking to your page have a good Pagerank they are not exactly relevant to your page. That is to say your page could be about ships but the pages linking to you are about birds, mountains and needlework. These links are giving your page a good Pagerank but they are not relevant to your page.

So along comes a person searching and they type 'ships' into Google. Your page, with its Pagerank of 4 is at number 8 but the page at number one only has a Pagerank of three! How come?

The page at number one most likely doesn't have as many links as you, or at least as many quality links - links from pages that themselves have links. However, the links the page at number one does have are all from sites about ships. So, other pages about ships are linking to this page which is about ships. That's (probably) why it's beating your Pagerank 4 page even though it's only Pagerank 3, and that's why people think Pagerank has no value. "How can Pagerank have any value if a page with Pagerank 3 beats a page with Pagerank 6?". You now understand why, relevancy.

What this all means is simple. If you have a high Pagerank because you've been busy securing lots of irrelevant links you are not going to see much benefit from it. If however you have a high Pagerank from securing highly relevant links you will see a benefit from it. This is why sometimes the number one page is a high Pagerank and sometimes it isn't.

Getting a good rank in Google for a competitive phrase is hard work. In this context you shouldn't concern yourself with pagerank. If however you can secure high quality relevant links to your page you will see your pagerank AND traffic increase.

If you have a new website then it takes some time until Google visits your web pages. Even if you submit your website to Google via their regular submission form, it usually takes weeks until Google visits your site.

There are some things you can do so that Google indexes your web page within 48 hours and not within weeks.

Tip 1: Get a link from an existing site

Links are very important for high rankings on Google. The more (quality) links you have, the higher Google will rank your pages. An easy way to get a link to your website is to join a forum that is related to your website. Participate in the discussions and sign your posts with your name and a link to your website.

Make sure that you do not spam the forums. Only participate in an online discussion if you really have something to say about the topic. If you post in a well known forum then Google will quickly pickup the link to your site.

Tip 2: Create an external blog

Google likes blogs and many blogs are indexed very quickly. Use Google's Blogger.com service to create a blog that is related to your business. Write a few posts and add a link to your website in your blog posts. Google will quickly index your Blogger blog and find the link to your site.

Tip 3: Get as many links as you can

The more other websites link to your website, the sooner Google will find your site. Use IBP's link building tool ARELIS and IBP's directory submitter to get as many links as possible.

If you use all of these methods, it's very likely that Google will index your website within 48 hours.
Links on the other pages make sure that Google finds your website more quickly. The more links point to your website, the more likely it is that Google will find your site. In addition, you will get higher rankings if many other pages link to your site. Further information on how to get high quality links can be found in our free link building eBook.

The best source of targeted traffic to your blog is still the natural traffic provided by the search engines. If your blog is new, getting indexed by Yahoo and Google takes time and a lot of effort.

Constantly updating your blog is necessary to attract the search engine spiders. But there is one trick that can be done to get your blog indexed really fast. You may be surprised that Yahoo may do it in one hour. Google can in as fast as 15 minutes.

Here's how. You must have your real simple syndication feed ( RSS ). I prefer using the one provided by feedburner.com. I won't discuss feedburner anymore. Getting an account is so simple.

For Yahoo:

  1. Access your My Yahoo page. If you're not using a yahoo mail, get one.
  2. On "My Main Tab" click the "add content" link.
  3. Click the "Add RSS Feed" link at the bottom.
  4. Type or paste the exact link provided by feedburner, NOT your blog url.
  5. Click "Add" and you're done.
If you're lucky, you will immediately see your feed, the name of your blog and the titles of your posts.

If not, be patient. Try again after an hour. The worst is it may take up to a day.

When you have successfully added your feed to your My Yahoo, you will get an added bonus. Google will follow and index your blog. If you need to be sure, do the same for Google reader. Get a gmail account, look for the "reader" link. Same principle applies.

If you own a website or a blog, or both, you'd probably want Google to know you exist. I mean, Google knew YouTube existed and copped it for a whopping $1.6 billion dollars. I'm sure you could do with, half of that kinda cash lying around somewhere. So to get there, you need to get your site or blog indexed in Google as a starting point.

Note: I know many of you still have problems getting indexed in Google for your site or blog. I will cover that topic in future.

How To Check If Google Has Indexed My Site

  1. Fire up your browser and go to Google. Now, type in the url of your site or blog into Google's search box either like http://yoursite.com/ or www.yoursite.com or yoursite.com. Each variation of the url might bring up different results so try all of those. If you get a result, you're IN! You're now in Google's database where someone who happens to search for your name or the name of your site, will find it in Google. For this example, I'll be using General Motors' blog (bet ya didn't know General Motors' had a blog, did ya?). Why General Motors as an example? I just like the color of its site.
  2. Alternatively, you could type in site:http://www.yoursite.com or site:yoursite.com to see if it's indexed. This special syntax tells you how many of your pages Google has already indexed and are showing up in its database. Don't fret if yours isn't indexed yet. If your site is relatively new, it's quite probable that could be the reason why.
  3. Now, if your site is indexed, what you'd probably like to do next is find out, how much Google really knows about it. So, type in info:http://www.yoursite.com or, info: followed by any of the other URL variations I mentioned above. That should bring up a page which looks something like this:

Google shows a few clickable links which you can click to get more information about your site. You will see a link to Google's cache of your URL. A cache is a copy of the page that Google indexed. You can click on 'link to' to see who's linking to your site and so on (a tool that I would recommend you use to find out who's linking to your site is MarketLeap's Link Popularity Check at http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/. It's free to use and very useful indeed).

Let's just try clicking on Google's cache and see what pops up. What you'll see is a bit of information that Google tells you about when it last indexed your site and at what time.

Tip: Those 'in the know' about search engine optimization takes advantage of Google's cache feature to have it spider their sites regularly. Here's how you can do the same:

If you have a whole lot of pages on your site, Google's bots will never usually index all of it in one go. It will spider your site a bit at a time and return to index some more.

What you do is check Google's cache a few times over a few days to see how often Google's bots 'pays homage' to your site. Once you get an idea of its frequency, update your content before Google's bots returns. Do this regularly enough, and Google's bots will understand that your site is one that is regularly updated. What happens then is the bots will keep a regular schedule of visiting your site.

Taking advantage of this fact, place a link in your site or blog (now knowing fully well when Google is coming over for a visit), that points to your own product page, which could be a direct response web site or an order page (these sites hardly rank well in Google because of its lack of content). This sends a surge of traffic from your blog (which is now regularly visited by Google) to your product's website (hardly visited by Google). That's traffic you never had to pay for.

There's a lot to search engine optimization than meets the eye, but it is vital to anyone doing business online to understand it. I'll be covering more on this topic along the way and pointing you to resources that will keep you well up-to-date on how to keep you sites highly ranked and bringing in steady traffic.
